Introducing New Solutions and Course to Construct IoT Ecosystem
Hong Kong, 14 June 2019 – The 7th annual Hong Kong IoT Conference was held today in Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center, where Mr. Nicholas W Yang, GBS, JP, Secretary for Innovation and Technology Bureau graced the occasion as Guest of Honour, and Hon. Charles Mok, JP, Legislative Council Member, Mr. Victor Lam, JP, Government Chief Information Officer, Mr. Andy Bien, President of Hong Kong Internet of Things Industry Advisory Council & CIO of Airport Authority of Hong Kong, Mr. Peter Yan, CEO of Hong Kong Cyberport Management Company Limited, Mr. Albert Wong, CEO of Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation and Ms. Anna Lin, JP, FCILT, Chief Executive of GS1 Hong Kong were also present as officiating guests. Around 600 ICT executives and industry professionals attended the Conference.
IoT has great potential in improving operational performance, transforming business activities, and even stimulating new business models. The HKSAR Government, business and community sectors are all playing an integral part in the ecosystem to catalyse more localised IoT applications and realise the next chapter of economic growth. Inaugurating the Hong Kong IoT Conference, Mr. Yang said “The rapid advancement of IoT technologies is creating endless possibilities for enterprises and the Government. We are also pushing ahead a number of key infrastructure projects to support such developments. These include installation of Multi-functional Smart Lampposts, provision of electronic identity or eID to all Hong Kong residents starting in 2020, promoting the use of Building Information Modelling, and the deployment of a Common Spatial Data Infrastructure (CSDI). Let us work together to embrace and leverage these new technologies to better serve the Hong Kong public.”
IoT can drive increased connectivity of “things”, which leads to massive data collection. To harness the true value of IoT, Mr. Bien believed that “The data collected from IoT devices can help companies gain insight into the productivity and performance of their systems and processes, offering opportunities for innovation and growth, or even disruptive company model. It is important for every company to possess the professional skills and strategy to understand and make use of those data, allowing company to make data-driven business decision.”
Fragmented ecosystem of standards, devices and services is slowing enterprise IoT deployments. Addressing the issue, Ms. Lin highlighted the importance of open, global standards. “GS1 standards are a key enabler of IoT that connects data visibility to process automation. It enables companies and organisations to trace the movement of objects, to perform data analytics and extract consumer insights, to drive more effective, timely business decisions, and to enhance customer experience.”
Based on global standards, GS1 Hong Kong lately introduced a number of IoT solutions powered by EPCIS-based IoT platform ezTRACKTM, namely REAL Visibility, Smart Traceability, Smart Kiosk and cold Chain Sensor Network. They can be applied in different business scenarios:
REAL Visibility – Using patented anti-forgery micro printing technology, it empowers consumers with instant product authentication and traceability while enabling brand owners with real-time visibility on scan activities. It helps to build consumer’s trust and safeguard brand’s image.
Smart Traceability – Built on EPCIS, it helps businesses to address the demand for end-to-end traceability and build trust among supply chain stakeholders, from upstream suppliers to end consumers. The accurate and dynamic information about products ensures transparency among businesses and consumers.
Smart Kiosk – Integrated with the latest IoT (RFID & video analytics) and AI (data analytics and predictive analysis) technologies, it captures consumer buying behaviour that offers business insights and enables data-drive sales & marketing activities, creating a more personalised experience for consumers and driving sales.
Cold Chain Sensor Network – A solution that provides simplified, precise, standardized and cost-effective temperature, humidity and location monitoring on a real-time basis, transforming data into powerful information and insights.
GS1 Hong Kong also introduced the Smart Retail Supply Chain & Big Data Analytics course to empower industry professionals to build their data talent and identify the real value through analytics. Called CPFA (Certified Professionals for Apache projects) Certified Citizen Data Scientist Course, it is jointly organized with EmblocSoft, the only official organisation providing CPFA qualifications – certifications powered by Apache; and partnered with OpenCertHub, the sole channel to provide examination service for CPFA in APAC.
Speaking of the Conference, Ms. Lin added, “I’m delighted to see so many specialists today to share their expertise in IoT, revealing the many benefits brought to the business. I hope delegates are inspired and adopt more IoT applications, together we can foster the growth of IoT ecosystem in Hong Kong, paving the way to smarter business, better life.”
