Bay Area to Belt & Road 

Hong Kong, 23 November 2018  – GS1 Hong Kong today organized Belt and Road Forum 2018 themed “ Vision to Action: Logistics and Trade Facilitation from Bay Area to Belt & Road ” at Holiday Inn Golden Mile. The event is the concurrent programme of the Hong Kong Maritime Week 2018 supported by the Hong Kong SAR Government. Experts from APEC and Greater Bay Area shared their insights on cross-border trade facilitation, and an MOU signing ceremony was arranged to foster trade and logistics collaboration between Hong Kong, Greater Bay Area cities and the ASEAN countries. 

Distinguished guests including Dr. Raymond So Wai-man , BBS, JP, Under Secretary for Transport and Housing, The Government of HKSAR, Mr. Du Zi Jun , Acting Director General, Economics Affairs Department of the LOCPG, Mr .  Victor Lam , JP, Government Chief Information Officer, OGCIO and Mr. Yang Peng Fei ,  Deputy Director, Department of Industry and Information Commission of Guangdong Province were present along with other esteemed guests. In addition, Consulates-General from Belgium, Canada, Finland, Italy, the Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam, as well as speakers and guests from China, Vietnam and Cambodia also joined the event.  

Dr. So delivered the opening remarks as the Guest of Honour saying, “As an international logistics centre, Hong Kong has a long pedigree in every competitive advantage for meeting the increasing demand in logistics services brought by the booming trade volume along the Belt and Road and Bay Area regions. Our well-established infrastructures and networks over the sea, air and land offer seamless connection to almost all economies across the globe. We also offer trade-oriented and welcoming policies, including free port, low and simple tax regime, efficient customs clearance as well as a trustworthy legal system that guarantees a level playing field for everyone.” 

In order to foster trade and logistics collaboration, GS1 Hong Kong and The Chamber of Hong Kong Logistics Industry signed MOUs with Guangdong Logistics Industry Association, Vietnam Logistics Business Association and Young Entrepreneurs Association of Cambodia respectively. The MOU provides a strategic framework to promote adoption of Global Data Standards and IoT-based traceability network in cross-border e-commerce and trade. The parties also agreed to explore opportunities with each other’s member network. Such partnership is believed to enhance supply chain connectivity and harness innovation and technology in Greater Bay area as well as Belt and Road cities. 

Ms. Lin emphasizes the importance of standardisation and informatisation in Greater Bay Area, “The key to propel the trade and logistics development in the regions is to ease the flow of people, goods, capital and information. I believe to facilitate the flow of goods and information, standardisation is the essential component to harmonise and facilitate collaboration across regions to create more efficient, safe and sustainable value chains.”

“Currently, the barcode standard is also under pilot to integrate with China Custom HS Code to speed up customs clearance and enhance trade facilitation. I’m sure this will have positive impact on Bay Area development.”
In the Forum, experts and guests from different industries share their insights and exchange ideas on topics like “Mutually Complementary Bay Area and Belt & Road Initiatives Fostering Logistics and Trade Facilitation”, “Guangdong-Hong Kong Cooperation to Drive Informatisation”, “Achieving Logistics and Trade Synergy in Bay Area Cities” etc, in order to achieve supply chain connectivity and realise business opportunities in region.

GS1 Hong Kong also arranged a MOU Signing session with representatives from esteemed partnering associations from Asia-Pacific and Greater Bay Area, in order to demonstrate the solidarity of the local business community in facilitating information flow and trade at the Greater Bay Area. GS1 Hong Kong, The Chamber of Hong Kong Logistics Industry and Guangdong Logistics Industry Association signed the MOU.
