Hong Kong IoT Conference 2018 - Unleashing the Real IoT Business Values

Mr Peter Yan joined the Hong Kong Cyberport Management Company Ltd. as the Chief Executive Officer in April 2018. As the CEO of Cyberport, Mr Yan will lead the digital technology flagship to focus on fostering industry development, enterprise transformation and talent cultivation to realise Cyberport’s vision to create new impetus for Hong Kong’s new economy through digital technology.

Mr Yan has 32 years of experience in the information technology industry and is a fellow of the Hong Kong Computer Society. Prior to joining Cyberport, Mr Yan was the Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of SUNeVision Holdings Ltd.; and had held various senior management positions in large consulting and information technology services companies including Accenture, Tradelink Electronic Commerce Ltd., and Computer and Technologies Holdings Ltd. Mr Yan has been active in public services especially in the areas of talent development and digital technology industry development, serving as advisors to the Chinese University of Hong Kong, City University of Hong Kong and University of Hong Kong, as well as serving on the Board of Cyberport from 2011 to 2017.

Mr Yan holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and received Executive Education for Global Leadership from the Harvard Business School.

Anna Lin,JP, has been the Chief Executive of GS1 Hong Kong, founded by the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce, since 1989. In this capacity, Ms. Lin leads the organisation in driving the industry’s adoption of global supply chain standards, technologies and practices for better business efficiency and competency.

Ms. Lin holds a number of civic appointments in various committees, non-statutory bodies of HKSAR Government including Logistics Development Council, Hong Kong-Taiwan Business Cooperation Committee, Trade and Industry Advisory Board as well as “Digital 21 Strategy” Task Force on Industry Facilitation.

Ms. Lin also sits on various industry and professional committees including Hong Kong Trade Development Council’s Logistics Services Advisory Committee, Asian Institute of Supply Chain & Logistics Advisory Board, Efficient Consumer Response Asia Pacific Council and Hong Kong Public Key Infrastructure Forum. She is also an advisor of Hong Kong-ASEAN Economic Cooperation Foundation.

Ms. Lin is a native of Hong Kong. She holds an MBA degree in Strategic Management from the University of Birmingham, UK. She is also a member of the Advisory Board of the Business School at the University of Birmingham.

In today’s world of connected devices, businesses will not only collect and analyze data in near real-time with advanced computing techniques, they will also broadcast data back to devices, whether in the hands of consumers bringing closer proximity to brands, or in the supply chain thereby automating and accelerating responses to disruption and opportunities alike. With connected sensors embedded in products or home appliances, it is possible to understand how fast consumers use their purchases, e.g. when they are running low on a particular product.

Businesses will be able to reach customers in new ways too, via voice-controlled technology such as Amazon Echo, Alexa, and Google Home. As the number and variety of devices supporting voice-based applications grows, the consumer will be connected in a multitude of locations—at home, on the go, and in the store. The very nature of a dialog between a consumer and a brand will create a rich source of information and insight—insight that allows for heightened contextual understanding and empathy on the part of brands, presenting an unparalleled opportunity to develop relevancy, trust, and emotion-based connections with consumers.

In this session, we will explore how conversation commerce results in a new, emotionally engaged relationship between consumers and brands; what it means for customer experience; how artificial intelligence makes it possible; how business operations will need to adapt; and the huge opportunities Conversational Commerce presents to organizations that get it right.

Ir. Alex Kwan, Executive Director (Engineering & Technology) of the Airport Authority Hong Kong holds a Master of Science degree in Environmental Engineering (with Distinction) from the Imperial College, London and a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Hong Kong. Before joining the Airport Authority, he was the Chief Executive of AECOM Greater China. He has more than 30 years? experience in the planning, design and project management of large-scale transportation and civil infrastructure projects across Asia and North America, having worked for the Civil Engineering Services Department of the Hong Kong Government and taken up senior positions in major consulting companies locally and overseas. He is a Fellow of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers.

Abstract

HKIA has the vision to become a smart airport. One of the enabling technology for smart airport is to create a digital twin of the Airport. The presentation will describe how IoT could help to implement a digital twin of the Airport for holistic airport management. A number of current examples and future plan of applying IoT in baggage handling, smart infrastructure and facilities management will be described.

Daeyoung Kim is a Professor of School of Computing at KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology) and the Director of both Auto-ID Labs at KAIST, and Automotive Convergence SW Open Innovation Center. He serves on the boards of GS1 Korea. He is leading Oliot OpenSource Project (http://oliot.org) which implements GS1 EPC global standards including EPCIS, ONS,GS1 Source, e-Pedigree, and Discovery Service. He is actively collaborating with companies in the fields of food service, agriculture, healthcare, connected cars, smart factory,and smart city.

Daeyoung is the chairman of several Korean government committees including the new industry committee of open data strategy council, the standard committee of retail industry alliance, and the future industry standard institute of Korea Medium & Small Industries Managers Association. He will begin to serve on the boards of UTA(Urban Technology Alliance) from Oct. 2018.

Daeyoung received the B.S. and M.S. degrees in Computer Science from the Pusan National University, Korea, and the Ph.D. degree in Computer Engineering from the University of Florida. He has co-authored more than 250 academic papers in Internet of Things, Wireless Sensor Networks, Cloud Computing, Deep Learning, and Block Chain.

Abstract

Along with the rapid proliferation of IoT devices, cloud computing, deep learning, and big data analytics technologies, different IoT services have been applied to various industries including agriculture and food, healthcare, automotive, and smart city. However, due to the lack of common interfaces, data models, standards, and services, they suffer from thefragmentation, which prevents services from discovering anddata being readily shared and accessible in a seamless way.

In order to tackle this problem, we propose and open IoT platform, Oliot (Open Language for Internet of Things), built on top of global standards ratified by GS1. The platform stores standard event/master data into an independently distributed repository called GS1 EPCIS, which provides a standard open interface to access IoT resources. Through GS1 ONS and GS1 DS, the platform offer service and resource discovery to resolvethe independently distributed repository and the services from the various domains for service convergence.

In this talk, we introduce Oliot platform and it’sIoT applications and services that have been implemented and realized in the Korean industry. These services include the national smart agriculture and food safety systems, smart healthcare service collaborating with hospitals and insurance company, connected car services with automotive company, and global smart city project aligned with new international smart city alliance, named UTA(Urban Technology Alliance).

Dr. Lam recently joined GS1 Hong Kong and serves as the Chief Operating Officer. He oversees its operations in solution delivery and professional services and facilitates industry adoption of GS1 standards.

Prior to GS1 Hong Kong, Dr. Lam had spent more than 20 years in ITindustry, servicing as seniorproduct management and business development leaderfor several renowned hi-tech companies including IBM, Akamai, WebEx and Coremetrics in Hong Kong and the US.He has proven records in leading complex programs in cloud computing and data analytics.

When he was in the Silicon Valley, he joined a number of NASDAQ companies, such as CICI, Excite@Home and Cambridge Technology Partner and assumed both product development and management roles. He also worked for a couple VC funded startups, like Internet Travel Network - the first online travel reservation portal.

Dr. Lam graduated from the State University of New York with PhD in Computer Science and specialized in Artificial Intelligence, Data Pattern Analysis and Computer Vision. He had authored more than 30 refereed publications.

Dr Toa CHARM is the Chief Public Mission Officer (“CPMO”) the Hong Kong Cyberport Management Company Ltd. He helps develop the company's strategic direction and drives Cyberport's public mission-related programs with the goal of inspiring the next generation, nurturing entrepreneurial spirit and helping local start-ups go global. Before Dr Charm joined Cyberport, he held senior management and consulting positions from leading multinational and Chinese companies in Asia Pacific in the past 25 years including IBM, Oracle, HSBC and Kingdee.

Dr Charm has been actively contributing to the ICT industry development and community affairs in Hong Kong and Asia Pacific. He serves in a number of advisory boards in ICT industry, universities, startup communities and NGOs including Hong Kong Computer Society, Tung Wah Hospital Group, City University of Hong Kong and Hong Kong Trade Development Council. Dr Charm specializes in big data, fintech, digital strategy, business models innovation, growth and internationalization for emerging companies. He often shares his experience with corporate leaders, digital entrepreneurs and students. Dr. Charm is often invited as judge and assessor for ICT and innovation awards in Hong Kong and Asia Pacific.

Dr Charm holds a Doctor of Business Administration degree, a Master’s degree in Business Administration and a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science. He also completed management programs from Harvard, UC-Berkeley and CEIBS. Dr Charm is a TDWI Certified BI Professional and has completed a Big Data Certification Program from MIT.

Kelvin KO is the Group Vice President and Head of Logistics Technology. Kelvin is a seasoned professional in logistic operations and process innovation. Throughout his 25+ years serving the logistic industry, he has planned, set up and managed a number of state-of-the-art logistic facilities focusing on automation and process innovation, including the Cathay Pacific Cargo Terminal, the DHL Central Asia Hub, and a number of key express sorting hubs and logistic facilities for SF Express and DHL Express.

Kelvin holds a bachelor degree in Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering from the University of Hong Kong. He is a founding member of the Logistic and Transport Division of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers, and is a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institution of Transport and Logistics. He is also the Chairman of the Logistics Industry Training Advisory Committee, under the Education Bureau of Hong Kong SAR Government

A widely experienced Engineering Manager in Communications, Control Systems and Network who has over 20 years’ of related exposures, most of which have been associated with the MTR Corporation in Hong Kong. He has broad experience in a no. of railways around the region with in-depth knowledge in many telecom, control facilities and network in use by railways. He heads up a team of Internet of Things (IoT) young engineers to drive innovation by introducing smart technology for enhancement of telecommunication systems and control systems. The introduction of the innovative systems contributes to the Corporate growth and support the improvement of staffs and passengers’ safety, railway operations and customer experience. He is also a key member in Corporate heading the strategy development of IoT for the extensive railway transportation system in Hong Kong. He has also shared expert opinions for the adoption of smart transport to MTR subsidiary railways in China and overseas.

Topic – Smart Transport: New Railway Customer Experience

The new digital initiatives with IoT further enhanced the flagship mobile application, “MTR Mobile”, which enabled commuters and tourists to get travelling information interactively (Chatbot), read real-time service status (Traffic News), navigate inside stations easily (In-Station Finder and Fast Exit) and purchase the best fare-saving tickets (Ticket suggestion). These reaffirmed the Corporation’s ability to innovate, change and improve, and more importantly, to continuously deliver excellent customer services.

Challenges have been overcome by innovative and creatives solutions which were derived from constructive debates and effective communications across the cross-division team. Putting all the developments together to roll out the initiatives, the launch of the digital initiatives was successful and the Corporation was recognized with various awards. For example the Corporation was named by IDC as “Asia Pacific Digital Transformer of the Year” and “Hong Kong Digital Transformer of the Year” in 2017. In 2018, the Corporation was awarded the Smart Mobility (Smart Transportation) Certificate of Merit in the “Hong Kong ICT Awards 2018”.

Leveraging on the advanced technology, such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML) and Internet of Things (IoT), the serial launches of various digital initiatives marked an important milestone of the pioneering Digitalization Road Map of the Corporation that which aims at taking the customer experience to a next level through personalization and digitalization.

Mr Alan Young is the Founder of Caritas Information Technology Advancement Centre (CITAC) - Caritas Hong Kong. He has been appointed as Head of CITAC since 2000 and is responsible for strategic direction, business development and overseeing the daily operations of CITAC. His professional team provides IT services and system development to Caritas Hong Kong, Hong Kong Diocese, SMEs and HKSAR Government. One of the systems is the e-Care™, a residential care home management system which is a web-based system widely adopted by over 100 care homes in Hong Kong. eCare® has recently been awarded HKICT Gold and Grand Awards.

Mr Young is concurrently appointed as the Chief I.T. Officer of Canossa Hospital (Caritas) and Precious Blood Hospital (Caritas). He is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the I.T. department of the two hospitals including the development of the two hospital information systems.

Mr Young is the committee member of Xiangiao District Chaochou City Province Chinese People’s Political Consultation Conference. He is the committee member of Eastern & Wanchai District Welfare Strategy & Development Committee and the Observer of the Independent Police Complaints Council. He is an accredited Mediator of HKMAAL/HKMC.

Abstract

Elderly care home management needs sophisticated and professional knowledge. The daily operation of an aged care home involves heavy nursing care and tedious administrative work. Having worked with Caritas Hong Kong for almost 35 years, I have engaged in many different projects. One of my projects is to study the complicated work of our elderly care homes and to develop a system to release the workload of our colleagues and to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of our services to the elderly.

I will share with you the observations from the perspective of a user, a caregiver and an I.T. solution provider on how IoT can help to reduce the workload of the caregivers and to enhance the efficiency of administrative work of an elderly care centre. Apart from this, our government is encouraging "ageing in place" and "continuum of care" to enable the users to continue living in the community. I will share our recent work on the development of an integrated home service module that allows our colleagues to improve the home care services to the elderly.

I will also explore with you the new trend of care using new devices and the possibility of using the data collected for improving future care.

Alan is the Director of Digital Innovation in MotherApp Ltd. - a digital innovation and solution development company specialising in mobile innovation, smart operations and loyalty solutions.

Headquartered in Hong Kong, the company also has offices in China and the United States, offering innovative solutions through mobile, artificial intelligence (AI), internet of things (IoT) and data analytics. MotherApp’s clients include listed companies, multi-conglomerates, government bodies, startups, independent entrepreneurs and many others.

Alan graduated from City University of Hong Kong, with a bachelor’s degree in computer science and a master’s in management from The University of Warwick. Before joining MotherApp, Alan held various consulting and management positions in the telecommunications and information technology sector. As a founding member, Alan was also the General Manager of Asia Pacific in an European fintech startup, specialising in digital solutions in the offshore finance industry.

By offering his expertise and experience in digital innovation, business strategy and user experience consultancy, Alan has served a wide spectrum of organisations in both the public and private sector, making much headway in their drive towards digital innovation and an unparalleled user experience.

Elina had worked on various Smart Cities initiatives for Tata Consultancy Services China with specific focus on Smart Healthcare since 2010. In 2011, she partnered with Singapore Management University to set up the iCity Lab which is part of TCS' COIN Innovation Network with strong focus on leveraging IOT, wearable technologies and socio-behavioural research to improve clinical and community care service delivery at Singapore national level. Based in Singapore, she was in charge of planning and managing the allocation of resources for varies healthcare research programs, promoting research outcomes and managing partnerships with external parties from both industry and government. Elina was the listed collaborator for iCity Lab’s flagship ageing-in-place initiative - "SHINESeniors"- which was jointly awarded by the Ministry of National Development and National Research Foundation under the Land and Liveability National Innovation Challenge in Nov 2014.

Elina holds an MBA degree from University of Cambridge and a Bachelor degree in Computer Science from UESTC in China. She is also a member of Asia Marketing Federation with deep focus on promoting business in APAC region. She was awarded by E&Y as the “China Women in Business Network- Young Achiever of the Year” in 2011.

Abstract

APAC countries, especially Singapore, Japan and China, face a major challenge in providing care and support for senior citizens due to its rapidly ageing population and declining old-age support ratio. Varies smart healthcare initiatives were piloted across the region under the Smart City umbrella. The concept of Ageing-in-Place was introduced by the Singapore government to allow older people to live independently in their own homes and communities so that the need for institutionalised care will only be utilised when necessary. In such cases, how can Digital Health and IOT help to alleviate the burden of the increasing investment in providing care services to the ageing society and to fill the gap of expectations from government, heathcare providers and patients-in-need?

The design of such IT services requires interdisciplinary efforts to look beyond the technical requirements. We have three fundamental questions that needs to be answered. First, how to make community care services and healthcare effective through innovations in the use of digital technologies and the design of care delivery model? Second, how to lower the cost of service delivery and improve productivity of healthcare services by leveraging information and communications technology (ICT)? Last but last least, can we quantify such productivity gains?

Berry has over 30 years of experience in strategic planning, business development and technology investment. Before establishment of Teksbotics, he was the co-founder of Teksen (Asia) which was one of the largest application partners of Oracle in the Greater China area.

In 2004 Teksen was awarded as one of the best Hong Kong technology companies with a presence in China by the Trade and Industry Department of Hong Kong. In 2005 Teksen was merged with Hi-soft Technology. Hisoft was listed in Nasdaq of the USA in 2010.

Berry has in-depth understanding of robotics and artificial intelligence market in the Greater China area and extensive connection in Europe and the USA. He works closely with the top tier robotics and artificial intelligence research institutes and companies around the world.

Antonio WONG Shek-tung, graduated from the Department of Statistics, University of Manchester, the United Kingdom, a young entrepreneur born in Macao SAR. Former banking fund manager, Antonio has been dedicating to public affairs and committed to the use of big data and Internet of Vehicles (IoV) . In 2015, he became the Chief Executive Officer & Co-Founder of GreenSafety Technology Limited (aka "GST"), a Hong Kong SAR-based headquartered in Hong Kong Science Park. He later took up as well the position as a Co-Founder of think tank EntreLink. Antonio wishes to use his fund managing experience and Entrepreneurship to build a “Smart City" starting from Hong Kong.

Abstract

Road traffic accidents is a global issue. According to WHO, 1.25 million people die each year for it. It is the leading cause of death among the 15 and 29 year-olds. It cost most countries 3% of their GDP. It is predicted to become the 7th leading cause of death by 2030. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development has set and target of halving the global number of deaths and injuries from road traffic crashes by 2020 - but HOW?

4S Solution offers a complete set of fleet management practice entailing monitoring, data analytics, improvement measures, and support for the broader road management. By enhancing driver safety and helping business management, the solution also encourages road safety and carbon reduction for the greater good of the community. We are seeing a roadmap from GreenSafety, to smart cities, and sustainability.

Ir Yeung, Head of Information & Communications Technology (ICT) Cluster and Green Technology Cluster of the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation, is responsible for the cluster development, market strategy and development of the Smart City platform.

A Fellow of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers and served as the Chairman of the Electronics Division (2009-2010 Session) of the Institution, Ir Yeung has over 25 years of experience in business management and technology development.

Peter holds a Bachelor degree in Electrical & Electronics Engineering from the Oregon State University and a Master degree in Business Administration from the York University of Toronto. Peter is also a member of IEEE and the Pau Beta Pi Engineering Society

Dr Hong Fung is Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of the CUHK Medical Centre (CUHKMC), and Honorary Professor at the Jockey Club School of Public Health & Primary Care (JCSPHPC), The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK).

Dr Fung joined CUHK in 2014 as Executive Director of CUHKMC and Professor of Practice in Health Services Management at JCSPHPC. He was Co-director of the Master of Science in Health Services Management Program and Health System Leadership Program 2017 at JCSPHPC.

Before he joined CUHK, Dr Fung was Cluster Chief Executive of the New Territories East Cluster and Hospital Chief Executive of the Prince of Wales Hospital at the Hospital Authority (HA) from 2002 to 2013, overseeing the management and operations of 7 public hospitals.

Prior to that, he worked in the HA Head Office and was responsible for the planning and development of the public hospital services and facilities for over a decade. He spearheaded the development of HA’s Clinical Management System and electronic patient records.

On the professional side, Dr Fung was the Chief Censor (2010-2013) and President (2014-2018) of the Hong Kong College of Community Medicine. Dr Fung is well recognized for his expertise in medical leadership, health planning, health informatics and health services management.

Mr. Suen joined the GS1 Hong Kong in 1995 with over 19 years of experience in System Development and Consultancy, his responsibilities include advising local industries on the application of international Supply Chain Management standards and technologies as well as e-commerce infrastructure. He obtained his Master of Science (Eng) in e-Commerce from the University of Hong Kong in 2001. Two years later, he was elected as Vice Chairperson on XML Specialist Group of Hong Kong Computer Society, Vice Chairman of the Retail technology Industry Association as well as the Advisor of the HKSAR Government’s XML CG (Coordination Group).
